Marcos Rivera
Marcos began his life in the arts as a Musician. After many years of studying (attending Berklee
College of Music) and playing in various bands, he turned his focus to his career as a Digital Marketing
consultant. During his 12 year career working with top level graphic designers, he began to work as a
staff photographer and art director, developing his aesthetic while producing portraits and product
photography for his corporate clients.

After leaving his career behind, Marcos decided to leave New York for Las Vegas to pursue his portrait
work full-time. In May of 2010 he opened Photo Bang Bang in downtown Las Vegas with fellow artist
and friend Curtis Walker.

Artist Statement
Phone Sex is a series based on the lost art form of the phone sex operator. As a teenager in the late
1980’s and early 1990’s, late night television and the back pages of magazines were littered with phone
sex ads. The idea was always fascinating to me and on one fateful night, I decided to “pick up the
phone” (as a famous TV ad recommended). I was a nervous, 15 year old calling a 900 number out of
sheer curiosity. The operator picked up and asked me my name. I answered “Joe” in a deep voice. Joe is
my father’s name and I figured that if I lowered my voice she wouldn’t know the difference. After some
initial “get to know you” questions, there were a lot moans and “oohs and ahhs” … I said nothing … for
20 minutes. I failed miserably at being an active participant, but will always remember the encounter.

Looking back on my own experience with phone sex, I imagined that the woman on the other end of
the phone that day looked and moved like my flavor of the week (it was probably a cross between Kelly
LeBrock and Rebecca DeMornay). Years later, while building out the retro set at Photo Bang Bang and
doing some lighting tests, the red phone that would be the centerpiece of the series really stood out to
me. The deep red color of the phone transforms it into this instrument of sex that plays really well with
the fantasy that phone sex represents. At that moment I decided to embark on a series where different
women play the role of whatever male fantasy they choose to be.

Living in the “cam show” age, there is nothing left to the imagination anymore. You see the girl you
choose from thousands of channels, but they can never truly live up to the vivid fantasy that the voice
on the other end of the line can.
